Finding Solace in Food
Founded by Kelly Pi in 2022, SS&SE wasn’t just a dream - it was a necessity. After graduating from Temple University in 2018 with a degree in Electrical Engineering, her health began to decline. Debilitating migraines in the form of both frequent visual disturbances, numbness in limbs, and throbbing pain motivated her to seek help. Following disappointment from medical specialists in neuro-ophthalmology and neurology, she decided to address the issue herself. She researched alternative treatment methods as well as preventative care, until she discovered food elimination diets may help with migraines.
She began with the most common ones: chocolate, caffeine, MSG, dairy. Per her scientific background, she changed only one variable at a time, until it was discovered: gluten was the culprit.
After one month, her visual snow started to disappear, and in the three years since starting the strict diet, only two migraines have plagued her (due to extenuating life circumstances of stress and hormones) down from the 5-ish really harsh ones per year, and multiple moderately uncomfortable migraine symptoms (visual snow, numbness in limbs, etc.).
Since she started the diet, she’s eagerly shared her findings and experience with any migraineur she crosses paths with, in hopes to improve their quality of life- and even those with other ailments such as depression and anxiety, which are shown to be exacerbated by the inflammation caused by gluten consumption.
Lastly, she has always loved cooking, and finds it’s one of the main activities she can lose track of hours at a time while doing, and wants to share not only her creative, tasty food with the world, but give everyone the chance to enjoy a low-inflammation, healthy diet with high-quality ingredients carefully selected based on the scientific literature behind their benefits.
And yes, that even includes cake.
